Are you looking back on 2017 wondering what you spent your money on? Not quite sure what happened to the money you meant to save.

We all have been there at some point in our lives, it can sometimes feel like you’re never going to get ahead.  I know the feeling because I have been there before, but the key is to control your spending habits. You have to learn how to stretch your dollar.

I remember when I was little, my grandmother use to say she could stretch a dollar till it hollered.  I’m not sure I can make your money talk, but I can share a few quick action steps that will help stretch your dollar.

Action Step One: Create a list BEFORE you go shopping! This step has saved me personally hundreds of dollars and lots of time. Who of us has not walked into Walmart and seen dozens of things we want versus need? Write a list of what you truly need before you leave the house.  When you start shopping, stick to the list.

Action Step Two: COUPONING! Yes, cutting coupons is not just for the stay-at-home mom. We all can benefit from saving money, right? You may even find coupons that you don’t require a purchase to get the free item.  Savvy coupon collectors sell their extra items for cash.  For example, you may find a coupon to buy 5 tubes of toothpaste for $5, you may be able to use 2 coupons per a household. Now you have your toothpaste and toothpaste you can sell for a profit.  That’s a no-brainier, right?

Action Step Three: Thrift Stores. You would be surprised at the great things you can get from thrift store shopping. A good friend of mine deeply desired a rocking chair for her nursery, and everything she saw online was $100 – 250 dollars PLUS! She went down to her local thrift shop and, lo and behold, she found a beautiful vintage rocking chair. Guess how much it cost her. Twenty dollars, that is a huge savings! TRUE STORY. Before you buy it online or anywhere else, check your local thrift store.

I hope these three quick action steps help you stretch your dollar and get you moving and thinking in the right direction. Remember, stick to the plan you have outlined for yourself and I guarantee you will see results.
